Local Area

Maryborough is located in the heart of the Central Goldfields region of Victoria and is approximately a two hour drive northwest of Melbourne.  Our lovely township of Maryborough is midway between Ballarat and Bendigo and is the perfect place to explore the many unique nearby towns.  Visitors should take the time to explore Carisbrook, Dunolly, Majorca, Avoca, Moliagul, Bealiba, Talbot and Timor.

Our heritage is steeped in the gold rush with gold being first discovered here in 1850.  Prospectors continue to come to Maryborough and surrounds today in the elusive search for alluvial gold.  Gold prospecting adventure classes and hire of detectors and associated equipment are available from Coiltek Gold Centre www.coiltek.com.au

Visitors to our town admire and wonder at the magnificent historical buildings which dominate the centre of town - from the Post Office and Town Hall, to the 1860's Fire Station which now houses the Central Goldfields Art Gallery.  The Art Gallery is home to two original Pro Hart oil paintings among many other impressive works.  For more information, visit www.visitmaryborough.com.au
